We continue the report from our second day of visiting Gozo.
Citadella, Victoria, Gozo
Our goal is to see what the whole island looks like. If you have a similar dream, then go to the capital of Gozo – Victoria or other name Rabat. Citadella is located here – a place that can be seen from many parts of the island because it stands on a hill. You can call them a small town, around which there are defensive walls. The most interesting monument of Citadella is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You will see it at the beginning of your visit to the “town”.
We are most interested in the defensive walls of the Citadel, so we quickly pass through the narrow streets and enter the fortifications. I must admit that they have been kept in quite good condition. Some buildings we pass look a little worse. Some already became a ruins.
We walk around the defensive walls. Gozo seems to be a bit empty and barely built-up. At first, the views in Malta seemed to be so “harsh”. Over time I got used to it and now I even like it. Compared to Malta, Gozo is definitely a little greener. A lot of charm is added by the church towers, which are abundant on Gozo. During the walk, we try to guess which temples we saw and where they are located.
RABAT
In the pictures below you can see the buildings of Rabat. This is by far the most developed city on Gozo. After the walk, we return to the parking lot, where a cat waits for us.
We stay in the capital, but drive a bit further to McDonald’s. Me and Wojtek go for a short walk around the city, and the rest stay in the restaurant. We manage to reach the square, where there is a small, charming church, a cross and a monument. The trees of interesting shapes grow around. Buildings have colorful balconies. We literally enter the narrow streets, but they are not very interesting.
Orange sand beach – Ramla Bay
In every Gozo guide you can read about Ramla beach, where the orange sand lies. We park in a large, free car park and we are going to see if the guides don’t lie. Maybe the color of the sand is not somehow intensely orange, but in places where it’s wet or where the shade falls, it actually has an unusual color.
I dreamed of swimming in the sea today. Unfortunately, the waves and wind are huge, so it would be irresponsible to enter the water. We can only walk along the beach, although even this is a bit of a pain.
Walk to Calypso Cave
We leave the beach quickly and look for the trail leading to Calypso Cave. We don’t know the exact place where it’s located, but thanks to the location on the phone we know where to go more or less. Thanks to this we can easily find the path leading up the hill. It has beautiful views of the Ramla Beach, so I don’t regret that we didn’t choose the option of traveling to the top by car.
Finally, we reach a place called Calypso Cave. Unfortunately, the cave itself collapsed and only the observation deck with information about the history of this place remains. There is a legend that Calypso Cave is the same cave in which Homer from the novel “Odyssey” was imprisoned for seven years by the nymph Calypso. Calypso promised Homer immortality if he stayed with her, but he chose to return to his wife Penelope and fled.
After a short rest upstairs, we go back to the beach, and from there we go straight to the parking lot.
Sunset near Dwejra Bay
Once again, we use the sun calendar hint (SunCalc website) and drive to Dwejra Bay. We want to see this place during sunset. Me and Wojtek go towards the Rock Mushroom, and the rest stay close to the parking lot. When we get there, there are only a few people outside of us. It’s very cold but beautiful! We watch huge waves cover the headland, after which we walked another day on Gozo. Fear to think what would happen if we were at the end of the headland and suddenly such waves would appear as they are now.
After the sun gone down and it got completely dark, we return back to the parking lot. We almost needed to walk with flashlights in our cells. When we are almost there, we see from afar Robert stands at the very edge of the sea and suddenly a huge wave comes. As you can guess, Robert is all wet.
We spend the evening in the restaurant at the bay – Azure Window Restaurant. It’s open until midnight, so we have a lot of time to eat peacefully. Then we go to the port of Mgarr and from there we return by ferry to Malta.
